The use of religious symbols by Hamas and Hezbollah: The emblems of the organizations and the self-sacrifice of their martyrs
Summary:
Hezbollah ('the Party of God') and Hamas (“Islamic Resistance Movement”) are two Islamist resistance organizations that use symbols of the Muslim religion so as to promote their ideology, attain legitimacy, as well as attract supporters to implement their strategy. This paper applies the Symbolic Convergence Theory with an aim to examine how and why religious symbols of Islam are utilized in Hezbollah and Hamas emblems, which are the main means of communication and presentation of their identity. In this regard, this paper also examines the symbol of the martyr, which has forged the suicide attacks ('martyrdom operations'), the most prominent means of counterattack by Hezbollah and Hamas against their enemy forces.
