Emotional Intelligence and Educational Leadership in Europe: A Systematic Literature Review
Summary:
Introduction: Emotional intelligence (EI) has emerged as a significant factor in
educational leadership, influencing leaders' personal well-being, interpersonal
relationships, and adaptability in the workplace. Despite growing interest, literature on
the application of EI in educational leadership in Europe remains limited. The aim of
this study is to investigate the relationship between EI and educational leadership, with
the goal of enhancing leaders' effectiveness and fostering a positive school climate.
Purpose: This study aims to systematically map the EI skills critical for effective
leadership in education. It also examines strategies to strengthen EI among school
leaders in Europe, focusing on empowering the educational environment and enhancing
learning.
Methodology: This research follows a systematic literature review methodology,
employing inclusion and exclusion criteria to select studies from various European
countries. Data were qualitatively analyzed to derive conclusions about the primary EI
dimensions that contribute to educational leadership.
Results: The study highlights that skills such as self-awareness, empathy, and self
regulation are essential for school leadership as they promote communication, conflict
resolution, and the creation of a positive school environment. Additionally, EI proves
effective in reducing professional burnout and increasing job satisfaction among
educators.
Conclusions: This study contributes to the literature on EI and educational leadership
by offering guidance for developing training programs that enhance the emotional skills
of school leaders. It also emphasizes the need for further research on the impact of EI
on student and teacher performance and well-being.
