Ecofeminism and veganism: Ecofeminist thought on the moral treatment of animals
Summary:
Ecofeminism is a philosophical and activist movement that links feminism with environmental philosophy, based on the belief that men's domination over women and domination over nature are interconnected. Ecofeminist philosophy emphasizes the need for an integrated approach to overcoming all interrelated forms of oppression, one of which is speciesism. Ecofeminist philosophy has provided considerable theoretical analysis in the field of animal ethics, particularly with the articulation of the feminist ethic of care.
The ethic of care recognizes that each animal is a unique individual and emphasizes the importance of the values of care, compassion, empathy, and friendship as an essential part of the human relationship with all living beings.
Veganism, as a philosophy and way of life that seeks to eliminate all forms of exploitation and cruelty to animals, is a compassionate, non-violent way of life as well as a political expression of opposition to speciesism and all other forms of oppression and discrimination.
This thesis examines how ecofeminism and veganism relate to each other, with a particular focus on the moral treatment of animals. For this purpose, the common moral foundations are analyzed and the intersection of the two movements is explored. In addition, it examines how ecofeminist thought promotes veganism.
