A Musical Approach to the Sergiani of Palamas and Sofades of Karditsa: Describing the Sergiani in the Field and Providing Indicative Musical Transcriptions of its Repertory
Summary:
Karagkounides are an ethnic Greek subgroup located in the plains of Thessaly, in the regional units of Trikala and Karditsa. Their origin dates back to ancient times. Karagkounides have their own folklor, historical and cultural tradition and they are also known for their numerous customs. One of the most intriguing ones is the « Sergiani” custom. Τhis master thesis presents the historical and musical characteristics of the Sergiani custom in the regions of Palama and Sofades in Karditsa. Ηow important the Sergiani custom was in the daily life of people and what information the custom provides on the identity of this specific group of people. The songs of Karagkounides are a proof of how they wrote such vivid lyrics based on their life and feelings. The lyrics were then set to music and people danced in a rhythm adapted to their costumes and idiosyncrasy. Part of this work consists of musical transcriptions and commentation of the Sergiani custom songs of the regions of Palama and Sofades.
