The self-perception of inmates in correctional facilities regarding the impact of schooling on the development of their social and emotional skills: the case of schools at the Special Youth Detention Center in Avlona
Summary:
This thesis was conducted as part of the Master's Program in "School Counseling and Guidance" at the Department of Primary Education, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and the University of Cyprus. The aim of the research was to explore the self-perception of the students at the Special Youth Detention Center (SYDC) in Avlona regarding the impact of their schooling on the development of their social and emotional skills. To achieve this, seventeen (17) students, six (6) educators, as well as the Headmistress and the former Headmaster of the school participated in semi-structured interviews. According to the students' responses, it emerged that to a significant extent, education at SYDCA has contributed mainly to the development of social skills, and secondly, emotional skills. The family was recognized as the most important factor in shaping self-perception, with the school at SYDCA coming second and the involvement of teachers following. The students' self-perception appears to be subjective, as their views differ in part from those of the teachers and Headmasters, who believe that all students have been positively influenced by the school, but also express concerns about the uncertain future of the students after their release. The thesis concludes with a series of important suggestions for further research, aiming to explore the prospects for social acceptance of ex-prisoners based on the education they received. Education in correctional facilities emerges as a crucial field that requires ongoing research and support, as it contributes not only to the personal development of detainees but also to broader social welfare. The contribution of education to the development of soft skills is of critical importance, as these skills serve as a foundation for an individual’s personal development across all areas of life.
