<dc:description xml:lang="en">This master’s thesis investigates the arguments and explanations that students develop while solving mathematical problems designed to support the development of mathematical socio-cultural practices. The aim is, first, to describe the types of justification that appear in students’ discourse and, second, to examine the role of the teacher’s questions in shaping this discourse through the functional linkage between questions and responses. The research material consists of twelve (12) instructional interventions across different grade levels (Grades 10, 11, and 12 of upper secondary school and Grade 8 of lower secondary school) and one (1) post-intervention interview. The analysis followed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative reporting of frequencies/percentages with qualitative documentation using illustrative excerpts. Students’ discourse was coded using Walton’s argumentation schemes, while the teacher’s questions were coded according to the Bloom/Sanders taxonomy. The findings indicate that students’ argumentation is primarily organized around schemes grounded in rules/criteria and conceptual classifications, whereas in modelling and interpretive tasks the use of signs (indicators) and cause–effect explanations is strengthened. At the same time, the teacher’s questions show a strong emphasis on analysis-oriented functions, complemented by questions targeting interpretation, application, synthesis, and evaluation.</dc:description>
