<dc:description xml:lang="en">This thesis examines the historical evolution of quarantine as a public health measure, tracing its transformation from antiquity to the contemporary era in response to successive health crises. Rather than treating quarantine as a static or purely technical intervention, the study approaches it as a historically contingent practice, shaped by prevailing scientific knowledge, social structures, and dominant cultural interpretations of disease. The analysis draws on four emblematic diseases: leprosy, bubonic plague, smallpox, and the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. In the case of leprosy, references from the biblical period, the Middle Ages, and the example of Spinalonga are examined in order to demonstrate how quarantine functioned primarily as a mechanism of social and religious exclusion, largely detached from scientific reasoning. The discussion then turns to bubonic plague, focusing on the experiences of Ragusa, Venice, and London, as well as on the institutionalization of quarantine through the establishment of lazarettos. The section on smallpox highlights the cases of Amsterdam, London, and Boston, emphasizing the introduction of the first official vaccination as a decisive shift in the management of epidemic disease. Finally, the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 is analyzed through the contrasting quarantine strategies adopted by Italy, Greece, and Sweden, illustrating the diversification of public health responses in the context of advanced biomedical knowledge and complex social realities. Through this comparative historical approach, the study demonstrates that quarantine has neither remained unchanged nor lost its relevance. Instead, it has continuously adapted, at times operating as the central instrument of epidemic control and at others as a complementary measure, while remaining a persistent and integral component of public health responses across time.</dc:description>
