<dc:description xml:lang="en">Forest wildfires are among the most destructive natural phenomena, with considerable environmental, social and economic consequences. Simultaneously, these phenomena are increasingly occurring and becoming more severe in recent years. Their early detection and continuous monitoring is critical for limiting their spread and reducing their consequences. This postgraduate thesis aims to analyze and design the architecture of a space-based Wildfire Tracking system, capable of supporting operational fire monitoring in near real-time. The approach consists of investigation on the orbital configuration of satellite constellations, choice and evaluation of well-suited sensors for the detection of active hot spots and burned areas mapping, and analysis of space and economic environmental parameters for sustainability of the system. Thereafter, different low-orbit constellation configurations are explored and performance is tested on revisit frequency and operational efficiency. Furthermore, spectral bands required are studied for choosing appropriate sensors suitable for the system purpose, considering high spatial resolution. The research demonstrates that the proposed design can make the revisit time fewer than ten minutes which provides high spatial and temporal resolution for the detection and monitoring of fire. The work illustrates that a feasible and sustainable space-based solution can be implemented to be compatible with the implementation of the next generation of civil protection and natural disaster management applications.</dc:description>
