<dc:description xml:lang="en">This diploma thesis explores the complex and often marginalized relationship between mathematics education and the formation of active citizenship. Moving beyond the traditional perception of mathematics as a neutral, technocratic subject, this work argues that mathematics instruction is a profoundly political act, inextricably linked to social structures, power dynamics, and the development of democratic consciousness. Through a critical literature review, theoretical lenses from the fields of Critical Mathematics Education and social theory are utilized. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of Foucaultian power-knowledge relations, examining how the mathematics classroom functions as a field where identities are constructed and social hierarchies are reproduced. A central pillar of the analysis is the role of the teacher, which shifts from a mere transmitter of knowledge to a conscious negotiator of the learning process. The thesis investigates how educators can cultivate critical thinking and promote inclusive education, transforming the sense of failure in mathematics from an individual deficiency into a pedagogical opportunity. Finally, these theoretical approaches are applied to the critique of the Greek educational reality, highlighting the institutional and professional factors that either reinforce or undermine the teacher's mission to foster free and thinking citizens.</dc:description>
