<dc:description xml:lang="en">In this thesis, III–V semiconductor nanowires for advanced multilayer photovoltaic devices are studied. In particular, we focus on the optical response and optimization of GaInP/InP nanowires on a substrate under solar illumination, calculating the short-circuit current density, the open-circuit voltage and the efficiency, while taking into account the realistic optical constants of the materials. The calculations are performed using the layer multiple scattering method. Within this framework, the method is extended to compute the light absorption at every position along the length of the multilayer nanowire array, facilitating the analysis of current matching — a critical factor for the optimization of the efficiency of tandem solar cells. The ultimate goal is to determine the optimal geometric and material parameters that maximize the theoretical efficiency limit of such devices.</dc:description>
