<dc:description xml:lang="en">This thesis examines the Borderline Festival of the Onassis Stegi Foundation as a case of cultural marketing within the field of contemporary/experimental music. The aim is to investigate how a specialized music festival generates cultural value, shapes identity (branding), and develops audiences (audience development) through the experience of live listening, curatorial storytelling, and communication practices. The theoretical framework draws on the literature of cultural marketing (Kotler & Scheff, 1997; Colbert, 2014), the concept of festivals as spaces of community and capital within music scenes (Bennett et al., 2014; Chaney, 2020), and approaches that understand festival experiences as both extraordinary and embedded within everyday life (Daskalopoulou & Skandalis, 2019; Skandalis et al., 2019). Methodologically, a mixed-methods approach is followed: content analysis of the communication material of the Onassis Stegi and primary research through questionnaires addressed to audiences (N=70) and artists (n=4), combining closed-ended Likert-type questions with open-ended responses. The findings indicate a high level of familiarity among the audience with contemporary music, a positive perception of the festival’s “distinct identity,” and a moderate to high intention to participate again. At the same time, qualitative data highlight the tension between “specialization” and audience expansion. The thesis concludes with cultural strategy proposals aimed at strengthening accessibility, storytelling, and long-term community relationships around the Borderline Festival.</dc:description>
