<dc:description xml:lang="en">Oocyte aging is a complex and multifactorial process that critically affects female fertility. With advancing age, female reproductive capacity is not limited solely to the progressive quantitative decline of the ovarian reserve, but is also accompanied by a significant deterioration in oocyte quality, which is associated with increased rates of aneuploidy, reduced embryonic developmental potential, and an elevated risk of implantation failure or early pregnancy loss. The aim of the present thesis is to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying oocyte aging. A literature review was conducted using international databases, focusing on the most recent studies involving human samples and mouse models. The findings indicate that oocyte aging is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, alterations in the mitochondrial genome and extensive metabolic disturbances, telomere shortening, as well as epigenetic modifications. In addition, age-related alterations in the ovarian follicular microenvironment are observed, affecting the functional communication between the oocyte and granulosa cells and, indirectly, oocyte quality. Finally, emerging therapeutic strategies aimed at delaying oocyte aging are highlighted, with emphasis on antioxidant supplementation, mitochondrial transfer, exosome-based approaches, and the administration of NAD⁺ precursors, with the goal of improving oocyte quality.</dc:description>
