<dc:description xml:lang="en">The study constitutes bibliographical research and examines the phenomenon of Orphism, one of the greatest and most controversial religious and philosophical movements of the archaic period. More specifically, it investigates the historicity or non-historicity of Orpheus, who is also regarded as the founder of the movement. The main biographical and bibliographical elements concerning him are presented, along with testimonies and beliefs of philosophers, Christian teachers, and researchers about his person. Furthermore, the doctrine of the soul introduced by Orphism is presented, a teaching which is contrasted with the earlier Homeric conception of the soul. At the same time, the principal beliefs and doctrines of the movement are also outlined. In addition, the influences that pre-Socratic and classical philosophers (Pythagoras, Empedocles, Plato) received from the Orphic doctrine of the soul are examined. Finally, a comparison is attempted between the teachings and beliefs of Orphism and Christianity, as well as an assessment of the extent to which the latter was influenced by this ancient Greek movement.</dc:description>
