<dc:description xml:lang="en">This paper analyzes and compares three historical phases of philosophical thought regarding animals to highlight a continuity among them. It presents an analysis of the conceptual arguments for the ethical treatment of animals through two primary works: On the Abstinence of Animate Beings by Porphyry of Tyre and Treatise on Animals by Étienne Bonnot de Condillac. The study attempts to cross-pollinate these historical perspectives with the modern approaches of Peter Singer, Gary Francione, Steven Best,Martha Nussbaum. Furthermore, it incorporates contemporary scientific views on kinship of species, intellect in the absence of language and the existence of proto-ethical thought in animals. By comparing the Neoplatonic arguments against carnivory with modern theories, the paper investigates the extent to which Porphyry and Condillac were pioneers, who laid the ideological foundation for animal ethics. Ultimately, it demonstrates how these ideas remain relevant in the ongoing polemic against speciesism, challenging the notion that humans as the sole object of moral attention.</dc:description>
