<dc:description xml:lang="en">Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) is a field within Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) interventions that is continuously growing. This thesis will primarily examine Ground-Based Equine Assisted Therapy (GB-EAT), an intervention model based on the individual's interaction with the horse without riding activity, but through other activities such as grooming, walking, and groundwork sessions. The goal is to prevent the physical burden on the horse associated with hippotherapy. Drawing upon scientific sources and systemic theory, this study will analyze the ethical dimensions and welfare dimensions of this practice. The main objective is to investigate the extent to which a connection between human and horse without riding can yield therapeutic benefits for individuals with social, psychological, or even neurodevelopmental difficulties, without compromising the well-being of the horse. The current research is a review of the existing scientific literature regarding the qualitative difference in the therapeutic relationship developed with the horse when there is no riding but connection, non-verbal communication, and trust, compared to classic hippotherapy. The thesis will focus on Animal-Centered Ethics and the principles of animal welfare, and will utilize models such as the Five Domains Model to analyze the physical and mental state of the horse as a co-therapist. Equine therapy without riding is considered to prioritize the horse's autonomy and avoid exploitation, thus it is considered a form of Animal Assisted Therapy which is more ethically congruent. The conclusions will address the need for guidelines and regulatory frameworks when working with this model, ensuring the well-being and rights of both the client and the horse-co-therapist. Consequently, a blueprint for an effective practice that is also ethically sustainable will be offered.</dc:description>
