<dc:description xml:lang="en">Introduction: Early recognition of patient deterioration is critical for reducing in-hospital mortality and preventing severe events, such as cardiac arrest or Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission. Early Warning Scores (EWS), particularly NEWS and NEWS2, provide objective assessment of patients’ vital signs and facilitate timely intervention by nursing and medical staff. Aim: The aim of this study is to document the implementation of the NEWS protocol at the «Hospital» and evaluate its ability to predict patient deterioration. A secondary aim is to assess the knowledge and understanding of the NEWS protocol among nursing staff. Methodology: The study consists of two phases: a) a literature review on the use of NEWS/NEWS2 and their effectiveness in predicting deterioration, and b) a retrospective observational study and semi-structured interviews with nurses to explore their knowledge and perceptions regarding the protocol. International literature confirms the reliability of NEWS in predicting deterioration, enhancing communication among healthcare professionals, and improving clinical decision-making. Results: International studies demonstrate that NEWS/NEWS2 outperforms other scoring systems, such as MEWS, qSOFA, and SIRS, in predicting in-hospital mortality and ICU admission. Proper training and understanding of the protocol by medical staff are identified as critical factors for its successful implementation in clinical practice. Conclusions: Current evidence supports the use of NEWS/NEWS2 as a frontline tool for the early identification of high-risk patients. These findings are expected to be confirmed by our study, providing valuable data to improve patient monitoring and clinical care.</dc:description>
