<dc:description xml:lang="en">The purpose of this thesis is to study the concepts of political correctness and populism through the confrontation between the "Leave" and "Remain" campaigns during the pre-election period of the United Kingdom’s referendum held on June 23, 2016. Both political correctness and populism are concepts with contested interpretations regarding their function, ideological background, and objectives. On one hand, political correctness finds defenders in its core definition of protecting vulnerable social groups by avoiding offensive discourse, on the other hand, this linguistic regulation raises issues concerning the restriction of freedom of speech, as well as questions about who defines what is "politically correct." Populism, as a constantly increasing horizontal phenomenon on a global scale, is approached as discourse, ideology, and performative style. Utilizing Critical Discourse Analysis as a methodological tool, this paper attempts to analyze the rhetoric of the two opposing political campaigns of the referendum. The aim is to investigate the construction of the concepts of political correctness and populism, while simultaneously examining the issue of immigration, which served as a focal point for the triumph of Brexit. The thesis compiles conclusions and observations that will, if possible, assist any future research in further deepening the understanding of these controversial concepts.</dc:description>
