<dc:description xml:lang="en">ABSTRACT Glucagon‑like peptide‑1 (GLP‑1) is an incretin hormone that plays a central role in metabolic regulation and energy homeostasis. It binds to specific GLP‑1 receptors distributed throughout the human body and is widely recognized for its involvement in controlling food intake, primarily through the activation of neurons located in the brain’s satiety center. Beyond its role in appetite regulation, GLP‑1 is closely linked to glucose metabolism, as it enhances insulin secretion in a glucose‑dependent manner while simultaneously suppressing glucagon release. These physiological actions underscore its importance in maintaining glycemic control and have made it a target of considerable therapeutic interest. GLP‑1 receptor agonists (GLP‑1 RAs) are a pharmaceutical class designed to mimic the biological activities of endogenous GLP‑1. They have become essential tools in the management of type 2 diabetes and obesity due to their ability to improve glycemic indices, promote weight loss, and offer cardiometabolic benefits. However, in recent years, scientific attention has expanded beyond their established metabolic effects. A 7 growing body of evidence suggests that GLP‑1 RAs may exert neuroprotective and neuromodulatory actions, influencing brain structures within the Central Nervous System (CNS) that are implicated in various neurological disorders. These findings have sparked interest in evaluating GLP‑1 RAs as potential therapeutic agents for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative or neuroinflammatory pathologies. Furthermore, preliminary research indicates that GLP‑1–based therapies might positively affect psychiatric and mood disorders, including depression and anxiety, by modulating pathways associated with neuroinflammation, stress response, and neural plasticity. Despite the promising data, critical questions remain regarding the degree of CNS penetration achieved by these drugs, as well as the precise mechanisms through which they influence neural circuits. Understanding their bioavailability within the brain and the full spectrum of their central actions represents a significant scientific challenge and a key area for future research.</dc:description>
