Summary:
The discovery of Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (1845-1923) in the late 19th century
fascinated the entire mankind. After the discovery of X-rays, a new
physical-diagnostic medicine has prevailed. This has led the Medical scientific
community to the orientation of Medicine not only in the diagnosis of various
diseases, but also to therapies monitoring, creating thus the conditions for
modern scientific studies. The importance of the discovery of X-ray imaging in
relation to other major medical advances is confirmed by the unusual popularity
of X-ray, which was a permanent discussion topic within the scientific
communities. This method was adopted abroad in a very short time it began to be
used in daily medical practice and at the same time to be an area of further
research and development.
Before the discovery of X-rays in 1895, the diagnosis of kidney stones, ureters
and bladder, and other causes of hematuria, was uncertain. Mistakes were
frequent and the location of a stone often could not be spotted. The degree of
individual kidney function was unknown. The first preoperative radiological
diagnosis of renal calculi reported in July 1896 by Scottish doctor
radiologist, John Macintyre (1857-1928).
Subsequently, many other methods were applied for the diagnosis of urinary
tract pathologies. Cystography, ascending pyelography and intravenous or
excretory pyelography wereand still are important tools in the hands of
urologists. The possibility of selective angiography of the renal arteries
contributed to the diagnosis and treatment of renovascular hypertension. The
discovery and development of ultrasound, CT and MRI offered great potential in
the diagnosis and staging of renal neoplasms.
