Deaths of inmates in Greek correctional facilities and correlations with the social, penal, medical history as well as with the findings of the medico-legal investigation

The situation in Greek correctional facilities was not in the best possible
condition, even before the onset of the economic crisis. This study concerns
the cases of inmates who died inside three correctional facilities. More
specifically, it concerns cases of Chalkida Prison, of Korydallos Prison and of
the Prisoner’s Hospital.
A special permit was obtained by the Greek Ministry of Justice, prior to the
meticulous recording of data from the penal, the medical and the
pharmacological record of each case. Furthermore, data was collected from the
medico-legal investigation.
Main aim of this study is to ascertain possible co-relations between all the
collected data, in order to allow drawing of conclusions necessary to adopt
new, improved policies concerning health care provision to prisoners.
The results of the present study, which by the way is for the first time
attempted in Greece, are presented thoroughly in the Special Part.
