Original Title:
Summary:
Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a rare autoimmune disease of unknown cause. It is
characterized by vasculopathy, fibrosis of the skin and organs, and
autoimmunity. Psychological factors, like depression, anxiety, personality,
stressful events, social support, coping styles, play a significant role in
adjustment to disease. In the present study an attempt was made to assess the
psychological factors that affect patients with SSc, in order to assess this
condition from a psychological point of view. It has been shown that patients
with SSc experience more psychological difficulties than other patients. Our
hypothesis was that those factors intercorrelate and associate with organic
factors of the disease. Patients with SSc were compared with healthy controls
and patient controls with rheumatoid arthritis. Clinical parameters of SSc
patients were identified based on objective assessments. The identification of
psychological parameters that contribute to suffering in chronic disease is
useful for the improvement of their care and the facilitation of adjustment.A
supportive psychological intervention could be designed after examining the
specific psychological characteristics of those patients, given the requisite
attention because of the dispersion of psychological characteristics in
population. An intervention program could consist of psycho-education,
psychotherapy sessions or skills training.
