Summary:
The main target of this thesis was the study of seismicity, the recording,
identification and analysis of all kinds of signals in the area of Santorini.
For this purpose, two local seismic arrays were installed in the area during
2001 and 2003. The distribution of epicenters showed low level of seismicity in
Santorini caldera and high seismicity in Coloumbo volcano especially in 2003,
due to the occurence of an earthquake sequence with the largest event being
Md=4.0. The spectrograms method was applied initially and all kinds of volcanic
signals with their features were discovered. Next, Sompi spectral analysis was
applied to the decaying part of harmonic volcanic signals. With this method was
calculated both the quality factor Q and the frequency of harmonic signals, and
then, the possible type of fluid that may cause such signals. The temporal
changes in Q and f values can be interpreted by the presence of mixture of
steam with water droplets in the crack whose increases the gas-weight fraction
over time. From these temporal changes and from the daily distribution of
harmonic tremor it can be concluded the possible relationship between magmatic
processes ant the seismic sequence in the period of 2003.
