Summary:
Patients with lung cancer often confront emergency, even life-threatening events
related to the disease per se, to the treatment or to the concomitant diseases.
AIM
The aimof our study is to categorize emergency events of lung cancer patients
who required hospitalization in our internal medicine department.
PATIENTS
We evaluated 90 patients (56 men and 34 women, aged between 33-80 years old)
with lung cancer who were admitted to the emergency department of our hospital
in a 1 year period(from 01/2012 to 12/2012) and required hospitalization in the
internal medicine department
RESULTS
Fever due to lower respiratory tract infections was diagnosed in 52
patients, whom 28 had recently received chemotherapy. They all suffered from
chronic respiratory disease. Vomiting with electrolyte disorders and
dehydration was the cause of hospitalization in 10 patients who were diagnosed
with end-stage disease. Finally, 28 patients wereadmitted due to severe
weakness in whom severe anemia( Hb <8gr/dl) was diagnosed.
CONCLUSIONS
Very ill lung cancer patients require immediate diagnosis of the cause of their
deterioration and treatment. Comorbidities often worsen survival. Finally,
treatment-related compications/side effects and the lack of their early
recognition often lead to emergency situations.
