Summary:
Introduction
Suicide is a problem for all countries of the world and is getting bigger and
bigger dimensions.
Aim
The purpose of the study is the registration of persons that were introduced to
tertiary general hospital in Athens with a diagnosis of suicide attempt during
the 5 years from 2007 to 2011 and the association of demographic and clinical
characteristics, with the changing socio-economic conditions of the period.
Material and Method
The data collection was performed with registration form in accordance with the
existing literature and the data that were contained of 491 patients in medical
records.
Results
Women are more than men regarding their arrival to the ED with a diagnosis of
suicide attempt or suicide.
Age was found to have a statistically significant difference (p = 0,020)
regarding the frequency in relation to the year of attendance as well as
marital status and years of their arrival (p = 0,007).
Statistically significant difference (p = 0,046) was found to appear between
work time and attendance age and also in 2010 we have the largest percentage of
occurrence of the group of pensioners in the ED compared with all other years.
Strong statistically significant difference (p = 0,004) seems to occur in
referenced attempts and year of attendance as well as economic issues referred
to as leading reasons in 2011 with a small difference.
Conclusions
It is understood that the economic crisis and its consequences will affect the
physical and mental health. Unfortunately, the rise in unemployment is
accompanied by the recording of a dramatic rise in suicides and attempted fait
accompli.
Individuals who have their historical suicide attempts and / or self-harm, will
fall into a high risk group to end their lives by suicide, since it is
estimated that the risk of successful suicide is 64 times higher in them than
in the general population. It is obvious that a failed attempt dramatically
increases the likelihood of a second.
