Summary:
Violent behavior is considered generally main feature of schizophrenia. Several
studies have examined the relationship between auditory hallucinations and
violent behavior in schizophrenic patients often with opposing results. Despite
the fact of no direct relationship, the vast majority of studies agree that
there are a number of factors mediating this phenomenon and the expression or
not of violent behavior. The present review sets forth the main results of
studies regarding the manifestation of violent behavior in patients with
command hallucinations. Both qualitative and quantitative characteristics of
hallucinations as well as features of the disease and attributes of the patient
seem to interact and define the degree of compliance with this type of
hallucinations. Methods of treatment and prevention of violent behavior, mainly
via psychotherapy, are also referred.
