Summary:
In the context of this thesis, written with the purpose of obtaining the Master
degree (MSc) in ¨International Medicine-Health Crisis Management¨ of the
Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens,
initially, in the context of its general content, we became more familiar with
the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), its categorizations, its
historical and geographical existence and its impact on women's health.
Subsequently, the reasons why it is practiced were studied (sociocultural,
sanitary and aesthetic reasons, spiritual and religious, psychosexual) as well
as the context of the human rights being violated by this very practice (the
right to the sexual and physical integrity, to health, freedom). In the most
specific part of this work there was a reference to the legal regulations which
apply to FGM in Europe as well as the health care provided to women with FGM by
the medical and nursing staff of the European countries. Furthermore, surgical
operations on the female genital organs for aesthetic reasons and for sexual
pleasure comprise one of the main parts of this work. Finally, we were led to
the useful results and conclusions of this specific, last part of this
particular thesis.
