Summary:
Lung cancer is the most common malignancy as far as impact and mortality is
concerned. Patients with Lung Cancer may have cerebral metastases during the
course of their disease and in some cases they need hospitalization for further
treatment and cure.
Aim
The identification of patients with Lung Cancer and brain metastases through a
retrospective study.
Materials and Methods
70 patients with Lung Cancer and brain metastases who were retrospectively
hospitalized in pulmonary Clinics of General and Chest Diseases Hospital
“Sotiria”.
We studied the medical records of those patients and compared their
characteristics and outcome.
Results
Among those 70 patients, 57 were male and 13 female with average age of 65,23
years (SD:9,48). 17 of them suffered from SCLC and 43 from NSCLC.
The majority of patients had metastases in more than 2 vital organs (41%) and
furthermore in the brain (24%). Cerebral metastases were appeared in average 4
months (SD:10) after the initial diagnosis of Lung Cancer.
Total 17 patients (24%) had metastasis in cerebellum, 15 in frontal lobe
(21%), 11 in parietal lobe(16%) and 5 in occipital lobe (10%).
Interestingly enough was observed the presence of metastases in both cerebral
hemispheres in 16 patients (23%).
37 patients (53%) received chemotherapy and 41 patients (59%) radiotherapy,
particularly 37 patients (53%) received radiotherapy in the brain.
The average survival was 12 months since the initial diagnosis (SD:14) with the
maximum survival being 66 months.
Patients who were admitted with cerebral metastases in the initial diagnosis
were 41(51%) out of which 32 were male (78%) and mainly at the moment of the
admission had neurological symptoms (63%) where as the main histology type was
the adenocarcinoma(37%).
54% of patients had metastases in more than 2 vital organs.
Patients had on average 2 cerebral metastases with the most common presence in
the cerebellum.
The average survival was 9 months (SD:11) with maximum survival 48 months.

Conclusions
Patients who were diagnosed with Lung Cancer throughout the course of the
disease experience metastases in the brain.
Cerebral metastases could appear at the moment of the initial diagnosis or
during the course of the disease and often they are not connected with signs
and symptoms from the central nervous system.
Cerebral metastases cause a significant decrease in survival and the average
survival was 9 months.
