Retrospective recording of bronchoscopic findings in patients who underwent bronchoscopy
Summary:
Aim and Objectives: The basic objectives of this study were to determine the
epidemiological characteristics and the bronchoscopic findings in patients who
underwent bronchoscopy in a Hospital for Respiratory Diseases and to
investigate statistical important differences in findings between men and women
and between lung cancer and non-lung cancer patients.
Methods: The frequency of epidemiological characteristics, pre-bronchoscopic
and bronchoscopic findings was reported in 142 patients who underwent
bronchoscopy due to respiratory abnormal findings.
Results: The majority of patients were negative for lung cancer, whereas the
commonest finding for the patients diagnosed with lung cancer was squamous cell
carcinoma (48.9% of malignancies). No statistical important differences were
reported between the 2 genders with the exception of smoking habit (p<0.001).
The radiological image and the macroscopic endobronchial image showed
statistically important difference between lung cancer and non-lung cancer
patients (p<0.001). Endobronchial mass (40.4% of lung cancer patients) was the
commonest endobronchial finding in patients diagnosed with malignancy.
Conclusion: The statistical important difference concerning the radiological
image and the macroscopic endobronchial image between lung cancer and non-lung
cancer patients allows us to predict with safety the diagnosis of lung cancer.
The combination of diagnostic techniques decreases the false negative results.
