Summary:
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of egg yolk, using two different
sperm cryopreservation media (SpermFreeze by FertiPro-Medium 1 and Freezing
Medium by Irvine Scientific-Medium 2), in preserving motility, after
cryopreserving normozoospermic semen samples.
DESIGN:Experimentalprospectivestudy.
SETTING: “Embryoland” – PrivateAssistedReproductionUnit.
PATIENT(S): Forty two men of greek nationality (age 25-45 years) with
normozoospermic sperm parameters. From each sample, 2 ml were used, one for
each cryopreservation medium.
RESULT(S):Statistically significant difference was observed only when good
forward progression was compared (p<0.05). When fair forward progression after
freezing with medium 1 and 2 (p=0.318), twitching spermatozoa after freezing
with medium 1 and 2 (p=0.095) and total motility after freezing with medium 1
(p=0.448) were compared, no statistically significant difference was found.
CONCLUSION(S):After comparing the means of each category, it seems that both
media affect sperm motility significantly. Based on the results, although all
types of motility are affected by both media, good forward progression seems to
be favoured by medium 1.
