Summary:
Introduction: The impact of increased blood pressure to the adolescents is not
as rare as previously thought and can cause significant problems in adulthood.
Obesity appears to have a strong positive correlation with the increasing blood
pressure. Physical activity – exercise is an important factor in the prevention
and treatment of hypertension.
Purpose: To investigate the levels of blood pressure, at students aged 12 -18
years old and the possible correlation with demographic data (age, sex, body
weight) and physical activity-exercise.
Material and Methods: The study population consisted of 496 school children in
Athens who measured blood pressure and body parameters (weight, height,
waist/hip). Additional extracted information on individual habits, demographic
characteristics and physical activity through a specific questionnaire. The
statistical significance was at the level of p<0.05. For the statistical
analysis of the data used the statistical program SPSS 16.0 and tests t-test,
x2, linear regression, logistic regression, logistic regression and ANOVA.
Results: 25.8% of students were overweight and 4.4% obese. Boys are more likely
to be obese than girls. (38.81 versus 21.13%). 26 students (5.2%) was found to
have hypertension and found a strong correlation between obesity and
hypertension, P<0.01. Then the children were divided into categories based on
physical activity in low PA (n=39), moderate PA (n=230), high (n=23). We found
that children with high PA finally showed higher systolic and diastolic blood
pressure, fewer heartbeats and they are usually boys, who have more free time
are more concerned with sports and spend less time studying for school. In
conclusion it was found that as they grow up, they reduce physical activity.
Conclusions: The rates of obesity and hypertension for Greek students are
similar to those of other Western countries. Worrying is the association of
hypertension with obesity and strenuous physical activity is associated with
higher blood pressure and fewer heart beats. The moderate-intensity physical
activity produces better results and should be incorporated in the lifestyle of
young people contributing to the reduction of morbidity in later life.
