Introduction: Valvulopathies in pregnancy may affect the pregnancy outcome, by
increasing the risk of complications for both mother and the fetus.
Aim: The aim of the present study is to focus on the most common and serious
valvulopathies that may coexist with pregnancy.
Materials and methods : Greek and international literature review was performed
and was concentrated on valvulopathies during pregnancy. We reviewed databases
such as Medline, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane database as
well as medical books concerning the subject of our study. We focused on data
concerning pathophysiology, diagnostic methods and possible risks for both
mother and fetus. Key words such as, “valvulopathy”, “valvular disease”,
“congenital heart syndromes”, “cardiac deficiency” ,“stenoses” and were
associated with “pregnancy”, “pregnancy outcome”.
Conclusions: Valvulopathies in pregnancy are a major challenge for the
obstetrician, who in collaboration with other members of the medical team such
as the cardiologist, the cardiosurgeon and other medical specialists have to
make important decisions for the safe completion of pregnancy , the antepartum
care and the time and way of labor management.
