Summary:
Abstract
Introduction: The literature is not clear whether parity affects the appearance
of
thyroid autoimmunity and hypothyroidism .
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of thyroid
autoimmunity and disorders of thyroid function ( clinical / subclinical ) in
childless
women compared to women who had at least one late pregnancy (over 28 weeks ,
regardless of the outcome .
Methods: The study was based on archival material of the endocrine portion of
the
hospital " Korgialenio - Benakio " during the period 2004-2012. Overall 1445
women
aged 58±15 years studied.
Results: The analysis of our results showed that the thyroid stimulating hormone
(TSH) depends on the number of children (F = 4,285, p <0,001) - with significant
differences in TSH among women with one child compared with those who had two (
p = 0,04) or three (p = 0,05) children . However , it was not found to be
dependent of
age (p = 0,653), or the existence of autoantibodies against thyroid peroxidase
(anti -
TPO ) (p = 0,360).
Conclusion: In this patient population correlation was found between the number
of
pregnancies and thyroid function expressed by the value of thyrotropin .
However ,
further studies are needed to address this question.
