Disturbances of rhythm and conduit in patients were hospitalized in pathology clinic.
Summary:
Introduction: Arrhythmia occurs in case of a heart rhythm disorder due to
disruption in production of heart rate, disturbance of their conduit or
combination of both.
Aim: The present study was conducted to study the frequency of arrhythmia
reported in patients who were hospitalized in the pathology clinic and their
correlation with the reason for entry.
Material-method: This is a survey conducted in Α Pathology clinic of the
General Hospital of Nea Ionia “konstantopouleio”. The survey was conducted in
the period from August 2012 until April 2013. The studied population consisted
of 154 pathological patients and data were collected by research protocol and
from the patients’ files. The statistical package STATA 9.1 was used for all
types of analysis. The search for a relationship between qualitative variables
was performed by testing method x2.
Results: We studied 154 pathological patients and was found that as age
increases by year it also increases the possibility of atrioventricular block
by 8%. In addition, correlation was found between patients with neurological
disorders and presence of atrioventricular block (p=0.025), in particular, the
patients with input diagnosis of neurological disorder were 3.7 times more
likely to face grater risk in having ECG input of atrioventricular block in
relation to other diseases (p=0.033). Age was positively associated with atrial
fibrillation (p=0.008).
Conclusions: From the results of the present study is concluded that with
increasing aging population the number of elderly patients with arrythmogenic
problems will further increase.
Furthermore , the present study triggers for designing epidemiological studies
on the clinical significance of arrhythmia regarding various endpoints such as
cardiovascular death and stroke.
