Endocrine disruptors and health effects-Case of cancer
Summary:
The recent years a big number of searches of the scientific community has
occupied with a new threat which prevents the normal function of the organism,
the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
The EDCs are chemical substances which affect the normal function of the
hormonal system, since they have the ability to imitate the natural hormones
and take their position to the cell receptors which bind the hormones in order
to function. Some of the most important effects in human health are: impaired
fertility, impaired teenage, neoplasm, cancer (breast cancer, endometrial
cancer, testicular cancer, etc.) and also the effect to the embryo during the
gestation, leading to the creation of the so-called congenital abnormalities,
which record threats to the embryo's health, even in its adulthood.
The use of the EDCs is very widespread and there are multiple sources of
exposure. Many EDCs we meet in our daily life are: the industrial solvents and
their lubricant products( PCBs, PPBs), the phthalate compounds, the
agricultural products (DDT, fungicides), the drugs, the phytoestrogens and the
heavy metals.
The purpose of this thesis is the imprinting of the exposure to EDCs and
mostly, how they are associated with cancer.
