Endocrine disruptors in cosmetics and effects on health
Summary:
The normal function of the endocrine system is essential for growth,
reproduction, metabolism and behavior. In the last years, there is an increase
in health problems for both wildlife and humans, some of which are attributed
to the exposure to anthropogenic substances. It was observed that some of these
substances interfere with endocrine system, disrupting its function and
resulting to testicular dysgenesis syndrome, early puberty, mental retardation
and more problems.
The urgent need to address the problem has lead the responsible bodies to take
appropriate measures, such as strengthening research in order to better
understand the action of endocrine disrupters and amending the law relating to
their use in consumer products. As part of its strategy for endocrine
disrupters, EU Community has created a database containing known or suspected
endocrine disrupters and a priority list of endocrine disrupters in need of
immediate attention. Some of these known or suspected endocrine disrupters are
used as ingredients in many cosmetics.
Known or suspected endocrine disrupters in cosmetics are phthalates, parabens,
triclosan, chemical UV filters, siloxanes, alkylphenols, resorcinol,
phytoestrogens, pesticide residues and heavy metals or plasticizers, as
contaminants.

The purpose of this project is to investigate the impact on health of the
exposure to the use of cosmetics containing known or suspected endocrine
disrupters. After a brief reference to the function of the endocrine system, a
general description of endocrine disruptors and their impact on health is made,
as well as a description of the problem management. Then, a reference to
cosmetics, the relevant legislation and the dermal route of exposure to
exogenous substances is made. The characteristics of the most important known
or suspected endocrine disrupters in cosmetics are then analysed, as well as
evidence regarding their effects and restrictions of the law. Finally,
conclusions on the risks from the use of endocrine disrupters in cosmetics and
suggestions in order to optimize consumer protection are presented.
