Summary:
The numerous chemical compounds that are abundant in the modern times
environment, primarily of manmade origin, appear to have a profound impact on
human health and wellbeing. The exposure of the human body to such substances,
which act as endocrine disruptors, has raised concerns throughout the scientific
community. A lot of research is being conducted (epidemiologic studies,
laboratory
animal experiments, wild life observations) in order to investigate the
mechanisms
through which the human health is affected by these hazardous materials.
The objective of this dissertation is to highlight the end points of this
exposure
to the human organism, as well as possible endocrine disruption mechanisms, by
means of a comprehensive literature survey through current relevant
publications. The
scope of such research is not limited to the scientific world, but attracts the
interest of
the society at large, and inflicts upon the way politics address modern
environmental
and public heath challenges. Public opinion on such issues is influenced by
education
level, lifestyle, access to information, publicity and dissemination of
knowledge.
Within this framework, the present study focuses on the community of
secondary education teachers, investigating their level of awareness and
appreciation
on the environmental and health consequences of endocrine disruption. The
selection
of the particular study group is reflecting the notion that environmental
education in
Greece is optional, not sufficiently widespread in the educational system, and
with
limited participation on behalf of the teachers. This report consists of two
sections:
The first part covering the theoretical background, and the second part
presenting the
research results and conclusions.
The research was conducted on the basis of a questionnaire comprising 19
questions, specifically designed for this purpose. 150 secondary education
teachers
were asked to fill this questionnaire, and the analysis of their answers leads
to the
following conclusions:
• There is insufficient participation of teachers in the implementation of
relevant
health and environment educational programs.
• The ability of the teachers to disseminate the knowledge to the students is
limited.
• While appreciating broad aspects and concerns over public health and
environment matters, most teachers lack in-depth knowledge and access to
information on specialized fields such as endocrine disruption.
