Summary:
AIM: To study the lesions developed in the Secondary Mullerian System.
MATERIAL-METHOD: We planned a 10-year retrospective study of all the lesions of
the Secondary Mullerian System, data that were collected from the Department of
Pathology of “Aretaieion” University Hospital.
RESULTS: The following 93 cases were detected of a total of 1670 various
ovarian malignant cases, for the decade 2000-2010:
1. On the ground of endometriosis: 40 endometrioid cysts of ovaries, 17
endometrioid adenocarcinomas of ovaries, 10 clear cell carcinomas of ovaries, 8
stromatic sarcomas and 1 adenosarcoma of ovary.
2. Ectopic decidua: 3.
3. Extra-ovarian cysts of the peritoneum: 7 epithelial cysts of Mullerian type
(5 mucinous and 2 serous).
4. On the ground of endometriosis: 4 extra-ovarian adenocarcinomas (2 in
abdominal wall and 2 in inguinal canal).
5. Mullerian inclusions: 1 ectopic Mullerian epithelium in para-aortic or
para-uterian lymph nodes.
CONCLUSION: The Secondary Mullerian System has the capacity to proliferate into
benign and malignant lesions. Their incidence is not negligible and mostly
concerns women of reproductive age. These remarks raise the need for doctors to
be familial to pathologic lesions in clinical practice.
