Summary:
Introduction: The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) consists an environment mainly
characterized by a high workload and specialized care demands. Nurses come
daily in contact with death and human pain .The intensive care of patients in
ICU demands close monitoring, alertness and decision making with high
responsibility. Nurses’ daily stress and tense lead them usually to fatigue and
finally to burnout. Aim: Main aim of this study was to explore the incidence
and level of professional burnout in nurses working in ICUs and the correlation
of burnout with a variety of demographic variables .Material-Methods: The study
was participated 120 register nurses working in a variety of ICUs. Data was
collected through a structured questionnaire named “Maslach Burnout Inventory
(BMI). Statistical package SPSS (v. 17.0) was used for the statistic analysis.
Results: Nurses’ burnout was found to be moderate. Data analysis revealed that
main determinants of this syndrome were age, round o’clock shifts, work
overload and especially the type of ICU (p=0.017). Discussion: The problem even
in nowadays is present and seems to keep growing. Unfortunately, the healthcare
system seems to do nothing for this problem. It is important that health
managers should acknowledge the problem and its incidence and they have to take
appropriate measures.
