Summary:
Obstetrical emergencies are life-threatening medical conditions that occur in
pregnancy or during or after labor and delivery. A thorough understanding of
the principles involved in their treatment as well as a systematic approach
based on international protocols and guidelines is required. The delivery room
requires organized structures to function as a critical care unit. Useful tools
for monitoring the healthy state of the fetus is cardiotocography, pulse
oximetry while systems STAN - Monica provide important information. The use of
ultrasound during labor is valuable both for assessing the state of the fetus
and to predict the evolution of delivery. The basic cardiopulmonary
resuscitation and cardiac support for both the mother and the newborn is
essential knowledge for those health professionals related to the delivery
room. Events during pregnancy such as miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, premature
rupture of membranes, preterm labor, premature placental abruption, the
placenta praevia must be urgently addressed. Preeclampsia, malpositions and
malpresentations of the fetus, twin pregnancy, shoulder dystocia, urgent
bleeding, amniotic embolism, pulmonary embolism threaten the health and lives
of mothers and newborn and solved with specialized handling based on evidence
based medicine.
