Summary:
Nosocomial infection from Clostridium difficile (CDI) as well as an
epidemiological analysis in a tertiary 713 bed hospital are herein presented.
In particular, the incidence of the syndrome is investigated for the entirety
of admitted patients in Nikaia General Hospital for one year, as it was
established by the pathogen and it’s A and B toxins presence in fecal samples
of patients with nosocomial diarrhea.
The statistical correlation of the syndrome with well-established risk factors
is also investigated. Such factors include age, sex, recent use of antibiotics,
widespread use of proton pump inhibitors, prolonged hospitalization or previous
residence in healthcare facilities and severe comorbidities. This was evaluated
by the analysis of medical records of patients with CDI and also included
correlation with other nosocomial infection incidence indices.
