Summary:
In Greece pesticide use still remains a cause of intoxication. This
epidemiological research on pesticide poisining is based on the records of
the Poison Control Center of Greece. The records of all the events with
pesticide poisoning that occurred in 2012 and 2013 were reviewed. The data that
was collected included the age and sex of the patient, the pesticide involved,
the etiology and the way of the intoxication. Deaths attributed to pesticide
poisoning were also recorded.
During these two years a total of 922 cases were referred to the Poison Control
Center. Of these 62.4% were male and 37.5% were female with a mean age of 52.5
years. In 100 cases the patients were children with a mean age of 4 years.
There was a higher incidence of poisoning from April until August directly
linked to the period of application of pesticides in agriculture. In 37.7% of
the cases the poisoning was due to accident, in 15.6% due to suicide attempt
weareas the rest was occupational exposure. 14 patients died. The main
pesticides involved were pyrethrines (28.1%) and glyphosate (20.8%) and
organophosphates (18%).
