Summary:
Introduction: Epilepsy disease is a chronic condition with recurrent seizures
that cause sudden reversible changes in brain functions. The seizure is a
clinical event may be due to several factors. There is a basic distinction
between the concepts of 'disease epilepsy "and "epileptic seizure ".
Pregnancy is a period in which significant changes take place both in the
body and the psychology of the pregnant so any chronic diseases exhibit their
symptoms in a different way by influencing the course of pregnancy and vice
versa pregnancy can affect the course and progression of chronic diseases that
already exist.
Materials and methods
The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate the effect of
epilepsy in pregnant and the fetus and the effect of pregnancy in epilepsy.
For this retrospective study was sought material in various databases such
as: Pubmed, Google scholar, Springer link, and literature review of foreign
language and Greek books and magazines as well as theses. The following
keywords were used: pregnancy epilepsy, counseling, seizure control,
antiepileptic drugs, breast feeding.
Results
A pregnancy is almost always possible to evolve smoothly into an epileptic
woman. About one quarter of cases seizures increase in frequency, particularly
at the beginning and end of pregnancy and during the period immediately after
childbirth. On reproduction the risk of manifesting epilepsy in children, where
one parent is epileptic and the incidence of congenital abnormalities is
balanced.
Conclusions
Epilepsy can affect pregnancy and pregnancy epilepsy. A woman who desires to
have a child should be informed by her gynecologist and neurologist in order to
adjust the treatment to monotherapy. The levels of the administered drugs
should be checked regularly (monthly) in order to maintain the desired
therapeutic levels. These checks should be continued during the first two
months of pregnancy.
