Summary:
The skin, being the largest tissue in the human body, is a complex and
sophisticated entity,
the existence and proper functionality of which comprises vital importance for
the body.
Its multilayer composition enables it to accomplish this purpose, but at the
same time
makes it vulnerable against a variety of diseases, the more important of which
are of
neoplastic nature. These diseases can be of simpler (non malignant) or more
serious
(malignant) forms, both from a pathogenic and diagnostic point of view.
Diagnosis is a
challenge of utmost importance in fighting the disease, because different
tumors may
resemble each other on many levels but require different treatment procedures.
The
answer to this major challenge comes from the field of immunohistochemistry
which
makes feasible histogenetic differentiation between similar tumors. This is
done by the aid
of antibodies as markers of cancer cells. The purpose of this dissertation is
to describe the
principles of immunohistochemistry and make an in-depth analysis of the markers
used in
the diagnosis/differential diagnosis of the major tumor types found in skin.
