SUMMARY
In today’s unstable and rough social and economic environment, the operation of
a Public General Hospital in Greece has become a very complicated litigation.
The accelerating cost in association with the limited budget of the public
sectors and the increasing demand for high quality service are forcing us to
adopt new methods for greater confrontation of the challenges that occur.
Hospital administrators are charged with psychological aggravation but they are
also responsible for creating the proper environment in which nursing is
practiced and patients’ given care is supportive and dedicative. It is
therefore important to explore interventions that will reduce the stress and
burnout experienced by them.
This study attempts to derive a better understanding of the consequences of the
stressed nursing administrator in a general public hospital through a review of
the literature in order to give a solid conceptualization to the various pieces
of the stress puzzle and therefore to prevent the symptoms that occur to the
worker. At the present time, research is often conducted without a solid
theoretical and conceptual base. The aim of this study is to detect factors
which lead to stress and burnout so a comprehensive blueprint in the work place
can be developed. As a result empirical studies could be conducted to
investigate these complex relationships prospectively, over time. Once work
stress is examined from a more solid theoretical and conceptual basis, then
intervention studies can be initiated to assess the most useful ways to
mitigate work stress.
Findings from studies of this nature could lead to enhancing those managerial
behaviors that improve the work environment for hospital staff. By reducing
stress at work, health care personnel could be more satisfied in their
positions. Finally, improved working conditions might make the role more
appealing and invigorate individuals’ interest in pursuing administrative
positions.
This study introduces the historical evolvement of the burnout syndrome which
is recognized by the WHO as a modern illness. There is a concept analysis and
separation of the meaning of burnout and stress. A critical review of the
published studies will help us to interpret the theoretical models of the
burnout syndrome. A general description of the symptoms and the dangerous
factors that lead to burnout in the health care sector will be presented
followed by possible prevention measures. Finally, the role of the managerial
team in the Public General Hospital will be analyzed as a major key to improve
working conditions through understanding the importance of mitigating stress.
