Summary:
Introduction: The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of moderate
intensity aerobic exercise on quality of life of elderly, on weight and body
mass index (BMI). In addition to this were to verify the effect of aerobic
exercise on systolic and diastolic blood pressure, on total cholesterol and on
fasting plasma glucose.
Methods: A total of 60 elderly, aged 65-81 years (mean age 69,03 ± 4,16 years
old) participated in the 6-month aerobic exercise program. Mean BMI (Kg/m2) was
27,8 . The elderly took place in this program twice per week, at 60-70 % of the
maximum heart rate achieved during the exercise according to the Borg scale.
Results: A statistically significant difference found in glucose in the total
group. After the division of sample in two age-groups (60-70 & 71-81 years old)
found that weight, BMI, glucose and systolic blood pressure have a
statistically significant improvement between the two measurements. As regard
the two age-groups found that the systolic blood pressure is significant
decrease (p = 0,000).
Conclusion: This study revealed the beneficial effect of aerobic exercise on
elderly as regard the weight, BMI, glucose, systolic blood pressure and the
quality of life.
