Summary:
Introduction
Lung cancer is, nowadays, one of the most common causes of death worldwide. The
rates of lung cancer in elderly patients are also increasing. Moreover, elderly
patients represent a special group of patients, which is usually
under-represented in clinical trials in Oncology.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of specific parameters on the
survival of lung cancer patients aged equal or over 75 years.
Methods
We have reviewed the medical notes of lung cancer patients of the Oncology
Unit, 3rd Department of Medicine, “Sotiria” General Hospital during the period
May 2010-November 2011. The inclusion criteria were patient ‘s age equal or
over 75 years and the diagnosis of small-cell or non-small cell lung cancer. 99
consequent non-selective patients met the inclusion criteria and were enrolled
in this study. Data concerning epidemiological and clinical characteristics,
treatment and outcome were collected.
Results
Patient ‘s performance status, number of symptoms at the time of diagnosis,
as well as number of lines of chemotherapy the patients of our study were
treated with, were proved to be statistically significant parameters as far as
survival is concerned. More specifically, patients with performance status 2-3
had statistically significant lower survival than those with performance status
0-1. Moreover, patients with 2 symptoms at the time of diagnosis had
statistically significant lower survival than those with only 1 symptom at the
time of diagnosis. Finally, the number of lines of chemotherapy the patients of
our study were treated with proved to be statistically significant parameter in
terms of survival, with patients who received 3 lines of chemotherapy having
the highest survival.
Conclusions
Patient ‘s performance status is an independent prognostic factor for survival
for elderly lung cancer patients. The number of symptoms at the time of
diagnosis and the number of lines of chemotherapy patients were treated with
are also statistically significant parameters in terms of survival. The results
of this study should be verified in prospective multicenter studies in the
future.
