Summary:
Hu-antigen R (HuR) is an RNA-binding protein that regulates the stability,
translation and nucleus-to-cytoplasm translocation of target mRNAs. HuR
function is directly linked to its subcellular localization. In normal cells,
HuR is mostly localized in the nucleus, while in malignant cells increase of
cytoplasmic HuR levels has been noted, in both cell lines and tissue samples.
Moreover, in malignancy elevated HuR expression levels and cytoplasmic
immunohistochemical pattern have been correlated with advanced
clinicopathological parameters and altered expression of proteins implicated in
neoplasia. We aimed to investigate the HuR protein’s expression in
neuroblastoma, as nothing has been reported so far. Our results suggest that
advanced stage neuroblastoma cell lines highly express HuR protein in
comparison to lower stage cell lines or other well differentiated carcinomas.
Further studies are needed in order to delineate the involvement of the HuR
protein in neuroblastoma as also its possible use as a prognognostic and
predictive marker for survival and response to therapy in neuroblastoma cases.
