Cognitive & physical exercise intervention for the reduction of "age-related cognitive decline" of healthy elderly
Summary:
Normal aging has been associated with “age-related cognitive decline”, for
which various cognitive or physical exercise interventions have been developed,
but not with a combination of these two types of exercise. The goal of the
present study was to investigate the effect of an intervention, which was
combining cognitive exercises for the reinforcement of perceptual processing,
with several forms of physical exercise, on the improvement of several
cognitive functions of healthy elderly. The study comprised a multicenter
controlled trial, in which 50 healthy elderly participated, who were allocated
either in the experimental, or in a control group. The participants were
assessed before and after the intervention with neuropsychological tests of
attention, episodic memory and executive function. After the intervention,
participants’ episodic memory and executive function were significantly
improved, without a significant improvement of their attention. In the control
group no such improvement was found. Our results show that an intervention,
with a combination of specific cognitive and physical exercises, can decrease
the “age-related cognitive decline” of healthy elderly.
