Frequency of thyroid disordes during the 1st trimester of pregnancy and obstetric outcome
Summary:
The thyroid gland constitutes one of the largest endocrine glands of the human
body. Ιts function has major role for the proper function of the organism. The
examination of the thyroid gland can be highly informative, as general
disorders of the circulatory and nervous system, are caused by the dysfunction
of the gland. The disorders of the thyroid gland may become even fatal during
pregnancy, a period of so many changes both in the body of the woman, but also
in the levels and function of hormones, and in the fetus.
This postgraduate thesis, entitled “Frequency of disorders of the thyroid gland
function in the first trimester of pregnancy and obstetric outcome” is a review
study, part of the Postgraduate Program “Research on female reproduction”. The
general part of this thesis describes the anatomy, the physiology and
pathological conditions associated with the thyroid gland. The specific part
refers to the function and the frequency of thyroid pathology during
pregnancy. The possible complications for the fetus and neonate are discussed.
Finally, the relevant guidelines of the American Thyroid Association for
diagnosis and management of thyroid diseases during pregnancy are analyzed.
