Summary:
Municipal Solid Waste (M.S.W.) management is a very important environmental
issue in global scale. M.S.W. contains various substances that can pollute
water bodies through leachates, when M.S.W. is disposed at Uncontrolled M.S.W.
Disposal Sites (U.M.S.W.D.S.). In parallel, the amounts of M.S.W. daily
produced increase, therefore increasing the disposal problem. For the proper
M.S.W. management, the amounts to be disposed need to be reduced, through
recycling and reuse. In the present work, the main categories of M.S.W. and the
main pollutants associated with them were presented, the sources and health
effects of these pollutants (heavy metals, synthetic organic compounds were
presented. Afterwards, the U.M.S.W.D.S. existing in Attica region were
described, on the basis of their current status, and were presented on GIS
maps, aiming to examine the possibility of pollution of groundwater, depending
on the hydrogeology of the area where they are located. The results have shown,
that 8 of the studied se U.M.S.W.D.S. have a high possibility for groundwater
pollution, 3 of them medium and 2 low. These results show the great importance
of the M.S.W. management problem, and the need of applying measures to prevent
this kind of pollution, that can cause problems not only to the water system
and organisms, but also to human health.
